Knowledge is power

Poetry is not the preserve of any one

Race, language or culture.

Many people try to read it alone,

Devoid of its cultural backing,

Like reading a chapter without the rest.

Some of this backing is just backing.

Capitalising each line feels right,

But is not part of the meaning.

Feci at non potui, ut liber sum.

Or do I mean “ut Liber sum”

A reference many of you will have to find,

Or look up online, as you translated that.

You may have glossed over it,

But then you miss out on meaning.

If you ask whence I come,

I would reply that I am a son of Lud.

And most of you would be lost.

So heed my advice and seek knowledge,

From the cradle to the grave.
